My Freshman Year
In this chapter, the Author talked mostly about ethnicities and foreign concepts to Americans. She also gives examples of the American customs the foreign students notice while they're at school. Many foreign people tend to believe or think that all Americans are rude and selfish but it's hurtful and not true. Although, I can completely see where they are coming from. America is very big about social lifes, the media and new technology. Everything here is extremely fast past and everyone is always in a rush; no one ever takes a breather; especially in the business world which pretty much runs our country. In my own experience, I've visited many cities including Philadelphia, New York, Tampa, and San Francisco, all more than once, and with every city and experience, not one person held a door for me, pick up something when I dropped it infront of them, and everyone was in a rush (even some tourists). I feel as if Americans took time out of their day to realize that there is something bigger than their jobs, America in general would be a happier and more loving place. I also find Americans to be very ignorant about other cultures and what they do. Unfortunately, I am guilty of being one of those people. But America is such a fast pasted country, I have to stay caught up.
The Mind At Work
This passage was about a group of young males who had to be in a program for their excessive use of alcohol and drugs. They learned a very important lesson while in this program. They were sent to meet this plumber and all he did was talk about what plumbing is, how and why it's important and what you do as a plumber. This sounds very pointless at first but their is a much deeper meaning to everything he taught them. The plumber explained that a home has many different aspects to it and if one tiny thing in the house isn't functioning properly, than the people who live inside the house don't live properly. The plumber teaches them that they need to look deeper into their lives and issues before acting inappropriately and doing things that will not solve the problem; like binge drinking and using drugs. I think that this was an extremely helpful program and that the boys were taught an eye opening concept.
